The Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, conducted by Henrique Constância, presents a Carnival programme exploring Beethoven's playful side, with works by Walter Murphy and Louis Andriessen, including the famous parody of the nine symphonies.

Full details

Synopsis Beyond the popular myths surrounding the figure of Beethoven and the monumentality of his music, it is worth remembering that it inspires many and varied moods. He himself had an unpredictable temperament, sometimes mordant or depressive, sometimes magnanimous or affectionate, sometimes mocking or playful. In this Carnival Concert, conductor Henrique Constância and the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa explore this last facet. Among other pages, they recall the ticking of the metronome in the Eighth and the famous four notes that open the Fifth (said to represent fate knocking at the door). They also play A Quinta de Beethoven by Walter Murphy; and let the pun with "fifth" (a traditional unit of measurement in the USA for alcoholic beverages) not go unnoticed. And also a musical parody of the nine symphonies by Louis Andriessen, for orchestra … and ice cream vendor's bell. PROGRAMME Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Overture to the opera Fidelio Ludwig van Beethoven 2nd movement of Symphony No. 8 (Allegretto scherzando) Ludwig van Beethoven 3rd movement of Symphony No. 2 (Scherzo: Allegro) Ludwig van Beethoven 1st movement of Symphony No. 5 (Allegro con brio) Walter Murphy (b. 1952) A Quinta de Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven 1st movement of Piano Sonata No. 14/2, Moonlight Sonata (Adagio sostenuto). Show original (Portuguese)
