Themed walking tours that take residents and visitors on a discovery of Lisbon — from the history of the municipality to Campo de Ourique, the places of the Inquisition, the palaces and convents of the Barbadinhos and Roman Lisbon — with routes devised and led on foot by city technicians.

Full details

The Lisbon Itineraries take residents and visitors on a discovery of the city. Prepared around various themes, they cover the city's daily life, its built and literary heritage, its streets and urban landscapes. Each theme is prepared and led by technicians from the local authority, who define the route and walk it on foot. Programme: 9 October: 10am. HISTORY OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF LISBON. Elevated to a municipality in Roman times, Lisbon was governed from the alcáçova of the Castle by the Moorish alcaide. It received its charter in 1179, during the reign of D. Afonso Henriques. Municipal government took place in the churchyard of the Sé Cathedral, moving, in the 14th century, to meet next to the Church of Santo António. This organisation remained until the ecclesiastical division of the city in the 18th century. Between 1717 and 1741 a second Council met next to the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos. After the 1755 Earthquake, a new building was designed for the Paços do Concelho (City Hall), on the site where it remains to this day. 13, 29 October, 10 November: 10am. THE CAMPO DE OURIQUE DISTRICT. Before the great Earthquake of 1755, the area where the Campo de Ourique district would later be built was an extensive plateau. Immediately after the earthquake, it was a place sought as a refuge by many who had been left homeless. An itinerary that starts from the Church of Santo Condestável, showing the heritage, streets, shops and gardens of Campo de Ourique. 13 October, 17, 27 November: 10am. THE PLACES OF THE INQUISITION. In 1536, in the reign of D. João III, the Inquisition and the Tribunal of the Holy Office were established in Portugal. In this court, which operated until 1821, the heresies that threatened the Catholic Church were judged. In Lisbon, its headquarters were located in the Rossio, in the former Estaus Palace, near the place where the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II now stands. The Rossio was also the stage for various autos-da-fé, public ceremonies of punishment of those condemned by the Inquisition. In this itinerary, we walk through some of the places related to this institution, from the Rossio to the Praça do Comércio. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 October: 10am. PALACES AND CONVENTS OF THE BARBADINHOS. The bearded monks of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin of the Province of the Calcedónia, who settled here in the 17th century, left their mark on this eastern zone of the city. The convent of the Italian Barbadinhos, founded at the initiative of the Portuguese crown to house foreign friars, is the landmark of the neighbourhood. In its grounds, at the end of the 19th century, the Water Pumping Station was built, which today houses the Water Museum. The neighborhood is also marked by discreet palaces, many of them houses of former noble estates from the 18th century, which served as retreats for noble families. 15 October, 12 November: 10 a.m. ROMAN LISBON. Discover fascinating Roman Lisbon through a cultural walking route that reveals the remains of ancient Olisipo, a flourishing city of the Roman Empire. The route passes emblematic sites such as the ruins of the Roman Theatre and the religious, thermal and industrial zone. Along the way, it is possible to learn about the daily life, engineering and rituals of the Romans who inhabited the hill by the Tagus. A walking journey through underground and historic Lisbon, where the past emerges discreetly in the heart of the modern city. 16 October: 10 a.m. OLIVAIS ANTIGO. A zone of very ancient occupation, with prehistoric and Roman remains, Olivais became a parish in the 14th century. According to legend, it was at that time that an image of Our Lady was found inside an olive tree. In her honor, a church dedicated to Santa Maria dos Olivais was built. Initially an agricultural area, Olivais experienced a period of growth in the 16th century and, later, became a favored spot for the nobility, who had their country leisure estates built there. 20 October, 17 November: 10 a.m. MASONIC LISBON. Freemasonry is one of the most discussed, respected, contested and controversy-shrouded initiatic orders throughout History. As a counterpoint to religious influence, it asserts the primacy of Man, having played a decisive role in various landmark events in Europe. This itinerary invites the rediscovery of some facts accessible to non-initiates, as well as of the Masonic symbolism that punctuates the city, visible to all, but not always recognized. 20, 23, 27 October, 13, 24 November: 10 a.m. FROM AREEIRO TO ALVALADE. Praça do Areeiro, with its singular buildings designed by architect Luís Cristino da Silva, is one of the city's central points, connecting Avenida Almirante Reis and Avenida Gago Coutinho, the latter leading to Lisbon Airport. Planned in 1938 by engineer Duarte Pacheco, then President of the Lisbon Municipal Council and later Minister of Public Works, it was only completed at the end of the 1940s. This route explores the history of Areeiro and its connection to the Alvalade neighborhood, part of a program of expansion and urbanization of the city of Lisbon. 22 October, 3 November: 10 a.m. THE CAMPOLIDE NEIGHBORHOOD I. In the Middle Ages, the landscape of the present-day Campolide neighborhood was marked by farmland, in which vineyards stood out. The great change came with the construction of the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, a monumental work intended to solve the problem of water supply in the city, and which brought the settling of many of the workers. Population growth and the urban development of the 19th and 20th centuries shaped the identity of this place, unveiled in this route. 27 October, 5, 24 November: 10 a.m. THE CAMPOLIDE NEIGHBORHOOD II. There are neighborhoods you pass through and there are neighborhoods you live in. Bica belongs to the second group. Spreading across the hillside that descends toward the Tagus, Bica holds the memory of old fishermen, varinas (fishwives), sailors and of the people who made this neighborhood one of the most authentic in the capital. Here tradition and modernity coexist, fado and urban art, where each street seems to open a new perspective on the city, as if Lisbon transformed, at every corner, into an immense balcony facing the river. 5 November: 10 a.m. THE FERNANDINE WALL I. Between 1373-1375, the Fernandine Wall was erected in Lisbon, by order of King D. Fernando I, to defend the city against Castilian attacks. At the time it had 77 towers, 38 gates and was 6 km long. In these itineraries, both the western and eastern sections are walked, and stories about its construction are told. 10 November: 10 a.m. THE FERNANDINE WALL II. A route that invites you to discover one of Lisbon's least known stories. Through streets, squares, buildings and place names, this itinerary reveals the presence of the African and Afro-descendant communities who, from the 16th to the 18th century, lived, worked and contributed to the city of Lisbon. 20 November: 10 a.m. THE ARCHITECT CARLOS MARDEL AND THE FOUNTAINS OF LISBON. In 1731, in order to respond to the problem of water scarcity in Lisbon, King D. João V decreed the construction of the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, a public and monumental work that entailed the building of fountains, which revealed new squares and open spaces in the city. Some of these are the work of architect Carlos Mardel, who settled in Portugal and was also one of the leading figures in the reconstruction of the city after the 1755 Earthquake. 28 November: 10:30 a.m. THE STEPS OF ANA AND MARIA SEVERA IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY MADRAGOA. An itinerary through the streets of Madragoa, one of the places where Maria Severa lived and grew up, revisiting the social and popular atmosphere that marked her brief existence. Among taverns, gambling houses, workers' streets and spaces of sociability, we will also remember Ana Gertrudes, her mother and tavern keeper, and the family daily life that framed the life of the future legendary figure of fado. Programa: 9 outubro: 10h. 20, 23, 27 outubro, 13, 24 novembro: 10h. DO AREEIRO A ALVALADE. 5 novembro: 10h.
