It's the songs. No matter how much talk is spent unraveling the progression of the Cleveland group and the poetic, harmonic, formal qualities gathered and/or lost over nine albums, it's in the memorable trail of the song that their essence endures. Anthemic, lived with heart on sleeve and the urgency of the words that break free, without ever falling into the populist trap (lol, Arcade Fire), but crafted for full-throated chorus and a fixed place in the indie collective consciousness: 'Wasted Days', 'Modern Act', 'On an Edge' or, of course, 'I'm Not Part of Me' in a long list that the most die-hard stans will always shuffle in the memory of that moment when the world seemed full of possibilities or Dylan Baldi's words reflected that college crush. A fundamental part of a possible indie lore that can be born anywhere and shaped the character of Superchunk, Built to Spill or Wavves. Without dwelling on that past, germinated in the lo-fi solitude of a first self-titled album and made real from the canonical 'Attack on Memory', the band led by Baldi, flanked by his longtime sidekick Jayson Gerycz on drums and multi-instrumentalist Chris Brown, continues to match step with their own songwriting instincts with 'Final Summer', their first album on Pure Noise after years of militancy on Carpark. Without deviating too much from a formula outlined in the aforementioned 'Attack on Memory' and definitively stamped on 'Here and Nowhere Else' — a blend of the energy of Hüsker Dü's 'New Day Rising' with the pop instinct of The Replacements — with the necessary twists and turns to keep things fresh over a discography where the ragged dirt of the guitars and the propulsion of the drums served a very catchy sensibility, 'Final Summer' brightens the production and, consequently, the aura of Cloud Nothings in 10 songs that evoke that naturalness of someone who has nothing left to prove. And they don't. So let's sing. BS.

Full details

Synopsis Accessibility: session with Audio Description on 18 February. House by Sharon Eyal + Rite of Spring by Mats Ek Ballet de L'Opéra de Lyon House House, by Sharon Eyal, is divided into several parts, like the different compartments of a house fully inhabited by the performers. Through a succession of collective sequences and solos that reflect, collide and merge, the piece portrays a world, or a home, in crisis. With music by Ori Lichtik, a DJ from the techno scene, the rhythms create a nocturnal and festive atmosphere, crossing over with references to classical ballet and contemporary dance. In this ode to dance in all its forms, Sharon Eyal builds a movement language that is simultaneously sensual and demanding. Beyond its virtuosic and almost clinical precision, the choreography opens space for a profound emotional charge. The bodies, strange and hybrid creatures, between the human and the robotic, undulate and unfold in a continuous flow of gestures, in a unity that can come apart at any moment through a permanent play of imbalances. Rite of Spring When it premiered in Paris in 1913 by the Ballets Russes, with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring caused great controversy and became a decisive work in the history of 20th-century dance and music. Since then, this score has inspired numerous choreographers, confronted with the rhythmic intensity of the music and the ritual of renewal that runs through the piece. In 1984, Mats Ek created his version of The Rite of Spring, revived in 2022 for English National Ballet. Four years later, the choreography is passed on to the artists of the Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon, who perform this version for the first time. In Mats Ek's reading, Stravinsky's music translates into direct movements, collective tension and constant impulses between the group and the individual. Between restraint and intensity, the choreographer builds a ballet centred on the body, ritual and the idea of transformation.
