Teatro Nacional D.MariaII Lisbon

A participatory theatre project created by Keli Freitas from the stories of immigrants living in Lisbon, whose performers bring to the D. Maria II stage trajectories that cross geographies, languages and cultures. A conversation with the artists moderated by Joyce Souza / Segundo as Marias takes place on 26 September.

Full details

Synopsis This participatory project, conceived by Keli Freitas, stems from listening to and meeting immigrants living in Lisbon. The creator, herself a migrant, brings into the process people whose stories cross distinct geographies, languages and cultures. In meetings, conversations and shared artistic practices, participants are invited to join a creative process that places their experiences and perspectives at the centre of the stage. More than representing a social reality, the project promotes effective participation and the visibility of different voices and trajectories, through theatre. Between personal accounts, everyday gestures and plural imaginaries, the stage becomes a place of encounter, recognition and collective construction, reinforcing the D. Maria II's commitment to participatory artistic practices and to the diversity of cultures and communities of the contemporary city.
