Music about to happen. It's something that occasionally emerges on the borders of pop with experimental rock. There are moments that marked history and are remembered even by the way they marked a context that was already quite generous. Think of This Heat embedded in post-punk and how what they did was much more than that; or Broadcast, who in the 1990s infiltrated Warp's promise of the future but, in the end, looked too much to a past of a British tradition of making electronic music that only began to be genuinely understood globally almost twenty years later. Curbside Lambsear are not here to be so revolutionary, but they drink from the same place. Music about to happen. With melodies that stick. A present that marks the future. A duo composed of Magdalena McLean (caroline) and Annabelle Mödlinger (DJ and host of Roadkill Ikebana on NTS), Curbside Lambsear is a beautiful manual of music happening and about to happen. The principles come from folk, in the search for building a melodic sensibility that is then completed with loops that create simple textures and fill the spaces of a music built from fragments. The voice crosses paths with various memories and sometimes Trish Keenan comes to mind, for the fit, less for the tone. They are also in line with contemporaries Tara Clerkin Trio. The track that introduced them to the world, Man The Door, aligns with the Bristol/London trio and its search for a new sense of music that crosses paths and finds another name besides trip hop. That's what this sounds like, something that is paving the way to a future we will remember years from now. Music about to happen, happening now. AS.
