Sonora and ZDB present Magnetic Resonance, a light and sound installation by Kathy Hinde, inspired by the way migratory birds detect the Earth's geomagnetic field for navigation; a process that seems to involve quantum entanglement in the photosensitive proteins of their eyes. A set of illuminated pendulums is set in motion by the attraction and repulsion of invisible magnetic forces, moving with a high degree of indeterminacy. Each pendulum functions as a light-sensitive instrument, emitting sound in the direction of its swing to create an immersive and ever-changing sonic universe, based on radio waves, static electricity and signals from the Earth's magnetosphere. Commissioned by Instrument Inventors Initiative, KONTEJNER and Overtoon 2026, co-produced as part of New Perspectives for Action, a project by Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the European Union.
