A duo formed by people who met around here, lived in and naturally mingled with the artistic movida of this pre-pandemic city, Or Sobre Blau present here the recently released Making Friends, deserving the seal of approval from Belgium's STROOM, after the latter reissued The Piri Samplers / O Terço dos Homens in 2024. Intimately linked to their shared life in Lisbon, that raw debut, born of improvisations with little prior planning, now has a thought-out, and inevitably more coherent, sequel with Making Friends. Worked on over six months, between Catalonia and London, Making Friends aligns the imagistic debris of the debut into full-fledged compositions, at times songs, based on the guitar work, acoustic and electric, of Kiran Leonard and Andreu G. Serra, taking on expressiveness through careful arrangements of piano, field recordings, percussion and other non-intrusive paraphernalia. And voices. Between Leonard's English and Serra's Catalan, at times in simultaneous translation. A music that could be aligned with a pure idea of post-rock, before it became synonymous with lanky gallops and insipid filigrees, as a mutant synthesis of ideas coming from folk, psychedelia or drone. Echoes of Tom Carter's mysticism, of the deconstructivism of the American canon of Gastr Del Sol and its sequence in Jim O'Rourke's Bad Timing/The Visitor, the hypnotic naturalism of the folks from the Jewelled Antler Collective who do not fix their imagination on American landscapes, in order to map themselves through the unknown, between the liberation of melody and subliminal tension, light and shadow. BS.
