In Black Midi, Geordie Greep was part of that generation of bands that renewed British post-rock and regularly played at the Windmill in London. Think of Black Country, New Road or even caroline — not a bad scene to be in. Black Midi enjoyed a different kind of critical and public animosity from the other bands, partly thanks to the way they mixed classic elements from other rock genres and integrated them into a very post-post-whatever stance. That is, until they ended in 2024. News of their vocalist, Geordie Greep, was not long in coming. Greep quickly released a solo album. 'The New Sound' immediately staked out the territory of someone who now wants to be a kind of Arto Lindsay for a new generation. Making the most of what distinguished him in Black Midi, his voice, Geordie Greep used it to build a bridge between fans of the band and fans who might come to this life closer to art-rock that embraces various sources of inspiration, whether tropicalia or jazz. With that quick statement, he wanted to demonstrate his role in Black Midi and how a certain appetite for melodies and for the unexpected in the band came precisely from him. Did he convince us? Yes, and then some. So much so that now, two years later, we eagerly await what might come next, whether a continuation from someone who can mix instrumental chaos with a crooner attitude, captivating us not by the mix itself but by the frantic edge that arises from it, like something that dazzles and is contagious, or something even newer, like a rabbit pulled out of a hat. Why do we think this way? Because Geordie Greep has already given us reason to think it's possible. What's impossible is not expecting the unexpected from him. AS.

Nos Black Midi, Geordie Greep fez parte daquela geração de bandas que renovou o pós-rock britânico e que tocaram regularmente no Windmill, em Londres. Pense-se em Black Country, New Road ou mesmo caroline, não é uma má cena para se estar. Os Black Midi gozaram de uma animosidade junto da crítica e do público diferente das restantes bandas, em parte graças à forma como misturavam elementos clássicos de outros géneros do rock e integravam numa postura bem pós-pós qualquer coisa. Isto até terminarem em 2024. Não se demorou a ter notícias do seu vocalista, Geordie Greep. Greep lançou rapidamente um álbum a solo. ‘The New Sound’ marcou logo este território de alguém que agora quer ser uma espécie de Arto Lindsay para uma nova geração. Aproveitando da melhor forma aquilo que o distinguiu nos Black Midi, a sua voz, Geordie Greep usou isso para criar uma ponte entre fãs da banda e nós fãs que poderiam vir para esta vida mais próxima do art-rock que abraça várias fontes de inspiração, seja tropicalismo ou jazz. Com essa rápida afirmação, quis demonstrar o seu papel nos Black Midi e de como uma certa apetência para melodias e para o inesperado da banda vinha precisamente de si. Convenceu-nos? Sim, e de que maneira. De tal forma que agora, passados dois anos, esperamos ansiosamente o que poderá vir a seguir, se uma continuação de alguém que consegue misturar um caos instrumental com uma atitude de crooner, cativando-nos não pela mistura em si, mas pela costela frenética que daí nasce, como uma coisa que deslumbra e contagia, ou algo ainda mais novo, qual coelho saído da cartola.
