A practical documentary photography course exploring Cascais' maritime heritage through images and testimonies, culminating in a 2027 exhibition at Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos.

The 'Sea of Memories' course is practical training in documentary photography that invites participants to explore Cascais's maritime heritage through images and the stories of those who keep their relationship with the sea alive. Over six weeks, participants will learn the principles of documentary photography, visual narrative and testimony gathering, building a collective project inspired by the knowledge and experiences of sea-related communities. In practical sessions and field trips, the challenge is to observe the territory, portray material and human heritage and record stories that help preserve this memory and enhance local culture. The course will end with an exhibition at the Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos in 2027, bringing together the images and short accounts produced throughout the course. No previous experience is required. The training is open to anyone interested in photography, heritage, memory and community-based artistic creation. Duration: 15 hours (6 sessions of 2h30). Location: Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos, with outings to different points of the municipality. Target audience: General public. Maximum number of participants: 25. Required material: Smartphone with camera or digital camera. Contents: - Introduction to documentary photography and visual narrative. - Composition, light and observation techniques for the territory. - Interview methods and gathering testimonies. - How to turn people, places and memories into photographic narrative. - Selection, editing and organisation of photographs for the final showcase. - Curation and assembly of a collective exhibition. Methodology. The course combines theoretical-practical sessions, experimentation labs and field trips, focusing on collaborative learning based on observation, listening and photographic creation. In direct contact with the territory and the maritime community of Cascais, the group builds a joint project that results in an exhibition, contributing to the appreciation and preservation of local memory. Schedule. 19 September - Introduction to documentary photography | Heritage, memory and territory. 26 September - Visual narrative, photographing people and gathering testimonies. 3 October - Building the photographic narrative | Project planning and preparation for the field trip. 10 October - First field trip | Documentary recording and collection of accounts. 17 October - Second field trip | Documentary recording and collection of accounts. 24 October - Selection and editing of images for the exhibition.
