To mark the 90th anniversary of the Grupo Amigos de Lisboa, the Museum of Lisbon presents the exhibition For Love of the City at Palácio Pimenta, tracing the path of the civic association founded in 1936 and its contribution to heritage protection and to Lisbon's public consciousness.

Brief Introduction To mark the ninety years of the Grupo Amigos de Lisboa, the Sala dos Fundos hosts an exhibition about its journey and its contribution to the city. Synopsis As a non-profit civic association, it was founded in 1936, received the Gold Medal of the Lisbon City Council in 1956 and was granted Public Utility status in 1980. Created to be a plural forum for debate, the GAL has helped shape a Lisbon public consciousness, focusing on the city's rich and diverse past, the substantial changes of the present and the so often utopian perspectives of the future. The GAL left its mark on episodes of heritage defence, such as the remodelling of Avenida da Liberdade (1955), the Plano Geral de Urbanização e Circulação de Lisboa (1967), or the preservation of Parque Ventura Terra (1983). Beyond that, the institution built a small but relevant museum collection, as well as a specialised library of about 8,000 volumes. Since its creation the GAL has brought together a remarkable group of olisipógrafos (scholars of Lisbon), such as Luís Pastor de Macedo, Gustavo de Matos Sequeira, Augusto Vieira da Silva, Norberto de Araújo, João Pinto de Carvalho, among many others. The history of the capital was the group's main constant, with 165 volumes of the magazine Olisipo published, along with books and proceedings of thematic congresses. For years, the magazine's cover was signed by Almada Negreiros, one of the first members of the GAL. It is this extraordinary history, dreamed up 90 years ago by a group of lovers of all things of the city, that the Museum of Lisbon addresses in the exhibition Por amor a Lisboa, a partnership with the Grupo Amigos de Lisboa.
