Interactive workshop to discover the Angklung, a traditional Indonesian bamboo instrument, and learn to play collectively.

Brief Introduction Discover the Angklung, a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made of bamboo. In this interactive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the instrument, its cultural context and the unique way the Angklung is played collectively. After a brief demonstration, participants can try playing the instruments and discover how different individual musical notes can combine to create a complete musical piece. No prior musical experience is required. Artistic Team Rachmat Samatimbang is a collaborator of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Lisbon and has more than ten years of experience in the practice and teaching of music and singing. Before starting his duties in Portugal, he was involved in teaching music and singing at Purwacaraka Music Studio, one of the reference music education institutions in Indonesia. In Lisbon, he continues to be actively involved in musical activities at the Indonesian Embassy, namely in the preparation, guidance and direction of musical rehearsals for cultural presentations organized or supported by the Embassy. Within the scope of the Angklung workshop, he will contribute his experience in music teaching, guiding participants in understanding basic musical patterns, rhythm, coordination and musical practice together. Andre Nurvily is a collaborator of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Lisbon and graduated from the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta (Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta), one of the main higher education institutions in Indonesia specialized in the arts. His training and experience are mainly linked to traditional Indonesian performing arts, namely dance and performing arts. Since arriving in Lisbon in 2018, he has actively participated in Indonesian cultural activities, including traditional dance and traditional music, such as Javanese Gamelan and Angklung. His academic background and practical experience in Indonesian performing arts will help introduce participants not only to the technique of playing Angklung, but also to its role in the broader context of Indonesia's cultural traditions and performing arts. Rahman Satyanegara is a collaborator of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Lisbon and grew up in West Java, the region of Indonesia where the Angklung originated. From a very young age, he was in contact with Sundanese culture and traditional arts, having started participating in activities related to the Angklung during his adolescence. His familiarity with the cultural context in which the Angklung developed will allow adding an important cultural dimension to the workshop. During the session, he will support the presentation of the Angklung as part of the musical and cultural heritage of the Sundanese people of West Java and will accompany participants during practical exercises of collective performance.
