Brief Introduction Imarhan bring the "Desert Blues" revolution to Portugal in October The Algerian quintet presents the new album Essam at Casa da Música (Porto) and at Lisboa Ao Vivo. 19 OCTOBER, Room 2 of CASA DA MÚSICA, PORTO 20 OCTOBER, Room 2 of LISBOA AO VIVO, LISBON Imarhan, spearheads of the new wave of Tuareg music, are preparing to return to Portugal in October for two concerts that promise to redraw the boundaries of desert sound. The band plays on 19 October at Casa da Música, in Porto, heading to the capital the following day, 20 October, for a show at Lisboa Ao Vivo. Originally from Tamanrasset, in southern Algeria, Imarhan have been, since 2006, the great renewers of assouf (desert blues). If names like Tinariwen or Mdou Moctar popularized the genre, Imarhan decided to tear up the rulebook. Over three acclaimed albums, they fused ancestral poetry with funk, psychedelic rock and pan-African rhythms, collaborating with figures such as Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) and Kurt Vile. On this tour, the group presents their fourth and most ambitious studio album: "Essam" (meaning "lightning" in Tamasheq). Recorded at their own headquarters, Aboogi Studio, the album marks a turning point. For the first time, Imarhan move away from the absolute dominance of guitars to explore electronic landscapes and evocative productions. Produced in collaboration with Maxime Kosinetz and Emile Papandreou (of synth-pop duo UTO), the record uses modular synthesizers to process traditional Tuareg percussion, such as the calabash and metal drums. The result is a sound that both winks at cosmic folk-pop on "Derhan N'Oulhine" and aligns with the vanguard of the dancefloor on "Azaman Amoutay". Sadam's voice appears on Essam more stripped back and confident than ever, also the result of his recent collaboration with Damon Albarn on the Africa Express project. These concerts in Portugal will be a rare opportunity to witness the evolution of a band that refuses to be labelled simply as "world music".
