Powerplant, Theo Zhykharyev's London project, play a Mondo Negro night at ZDB, bringing their self-aware, infectious take on black metal, with songs from the album Bridge of Sacrifice.

Brief Introduction Powerplant More than three decades have passed since the murder of Euronymous at the hands of Varg Vikernes, and the Scandinavian ice fury and hermetic mist that hangs over Black Metal — nourished by misanthropic instincts, not to say homicidal/suicidal ones — has faded from the trve kvlt purism of the nihilistic edgelord horde to increasingly assume the campy theatricality of corpsepaint. From the meme-ification of Immortal, through the sleaziness of Carpathian Forest, to the Lord of the Rings lore of Summoning, the figure of Mortiis and his pivotal role in Dungeon Synth, and the anti-NSBM satire of Old Nick, an increasingly self-conscious imaginary is traced of that fantasy which is consummated in the music of Powerplant. A delirium born in London from the mind of Ukrainian Theo Zhykharyev, who accumulated a virtual cult following over the years and is today a full-fledged band. Drawing inspiration from the garage punk of Misfits, the gothic faction of post-punk, the damp atmospheres of Dungeon Synth and, of course, Black Metal, Powerplant embody the genre's tropes with good vibes and no condescension, exulting in their latest album — Bridge of Sacrifice — their strengths in absolutely memorable tunes within a kaleidoscopic whirl. Between the harsh screams of Black Metal and a clean voice that strangely recalls Layne Staley while also indulging in indie and/or gothic excesses, Powerplant pull off the feat of making all this apparent confusion of tremolo picking, rock riffs, martial beats, epic synthesizers and acoustic passages a natural process aimed at the song.
