Discover one of the world's oldest tide gauges, in continuous operation since 1882, and learn how it measures the altitude of mainland Portugal.

Did you know that Cascais houses one of the oldest tide gauges in the world? In continuous operation since 1882, the Cascais Tide Gauge was a pioneer in tide observation and is still the only one of its kind in operation. But this small seaside building holds another secret: it is from here that the altitude of all mainland Portuguese territory is measured.
