Animated film based on Sarah Leavitt's graphic novel, portraying the relationship between a daughter and her mother with Alzheimer's, in an emotional and humorous tribute.

Sarah Leavitt, author of the book and co-screenwriter of the film, wanted to talk about the Alzheimer's disease that attacked her mother and shook the entire family. Leah Nelson was a fervent reader of Leavitt, and wanted to adapt the novel maintaining the black-and-white drawing and the wide emotional spectrum that were characteristic of it. Tangles is the story of a daughter who suspends a first serious love to dedicate herself to a journey of care and farewell. And it is fair to think that animation could go where, out of decorum, real images perhaps would not: it is a film of great expressive elasticity, which first shows a superhero mother, and then does not fear portraying mood swings, alienation, physical degradation. The vivid and intelligent dialogues, and a voice cast that includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sarah Silverman, Bryan Cranston and Seth Rogen, combine with the image to make Tangles an engaging animation, permeated with humor and poignancy in the construction of family and individual idiosyncrasies. At first glance, it is a film about the relentlessness of degenerative disease, but it is also a beautiful tribute to the mother-daughter relationship, and to the unlikely flourishing of new plans in that relationship.
