Exhibition and conference cycle on the work of Maria de Sousa, celebrating 60 years of her pioneering scientific discovery in Immunology, with conferences on May 18 and 27 and June 19.
On May 18, as part of the International Museum Day program, the Casa Reynaldo dos Santos - Irene Quilhó dos Santos inaugurates the exhibition Building Bridges, Leading Paths - 60 Years of Maria de Sousa's Discovery and opens the Conference Cycle Seeing the Unseen. The exhibition celebrates 60 years of a scientific discovery by Maria de Sousa, highlighting her pioneering contribution to Immunology and to scientific thought in Portugal. Organized around key moments of her life and career, the exhibition presents documents, testimonies, and objects that allow understanding both the impact of her scientific work and her intervention in the debate on the role of science in society. By highlighting the connection between research, culture, and citizenship, the exhibition proposes a comprehensive reading of Maria de Sousa's legacy. Within the framework of the exhibition Building Bridges, Leading Paths - 60 Years of Maria de Sousa's Discovery, the conference cycle Seeing the Unseen takes place, proposing an encounter between science, memory, and social commitment, evoking the work and legacy of the scientist Maria de Sousa, about 60 years after her pioneering discovery. Recognized for her fundamental contribution to immunology, Maria de Sousa opened innovative paths in understanding the functioning of the immune system, revealing mechanisms that were until then invisible to the scientific eye. Throughout this cycle, several scientists from different fields are invited to revisit her work, not only in its technical and academic dimension but also in its deep connection to society. The lectures cross scientific knowledge with ethical and civic reflection, highlighting the role of science as a tool for social transformation and building a more informed and just world. Seeing the Unseen is thus a space for interdisciplinary dialogue that celebrates curiosity, rigor, and commitment, values that marked the life and career of Maria de Sousa, and that continue to inspire new generations of researchers and citizens. May 18 | 6 PM. Two Scientists, Iron and Macrophages: a zebrafish tale, conference by scientist Rita Fior, principal investigator at the Champalimaud Foundation. May 27 | 6 PM. Moments Then, Eternities Now: the legacy of Maria de Sousa, a personal vision, conference by Cláudio M. Gomes, Full Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where he will evoke the figure of Maria de Sousa from a personal perspective, reflecting on her scientific, civic, and human legacy. June 19 | 6 PM. In the Footsteps of Clio: women and democracy in the 20th century - Conference by Jorge Muchagato, within the scope of Cascais, European Capital of Democracy. Through Clio, the Greek goddess of History, we trace the steps of history where women have been building their path in search of their individuality and civic and political rights throughout the 20th century, between the 1st Republic and the 25th of April, marked by a more intense struggle for equality and voting rights in suffragist and feminist movements.
