Housed in the former Aljube prison, the museum portrays the Portuguese dictatorial regime (1926-1974), its means of repression, the resistance of the oppositions, the anticolonial struggle and 25 April 1974, complemented by temporary exhibitions, guided visits, talk cycles and film and debate sessions. It also runs a documentation centre and an educational programme for schools and the general public.

Synopsis Through its long-term exhibition, the museum characterises the Portuguese dictatorial regime (1926-1974), its means of repression and oppression (censorship, the police forces and the political courts), the resistance of the oppositions (semilegal and clandestine), the anticolonial struggle and 25 April 1974. It regularly promotes temporary exhibitions around the themes connected to its collection, with a parallel programme in which the resistance of the past intersects with the defence of citizenship and human rights in the present. The Museum has a documentation centre, where it provides specialised literature, develops research activities, processes and shares a documentary archive and promotes a wide-ranging collection of testimonies from those who resisted the dictatorship. In addition to its educational work with schools and the general public, other regular activities are promoted, such as guided visits, talk cycles and film and debate sessions. Visitors can also see part of the structures of the building that houses the museum and an archaeological display unearthed from its basement. Inaugurated on 25 April 2015, the building's restoration and adaptation project is by architects Manuel Graça Dias and Egas José Vieira.
