In San Francisco, Cass, a non-binary person living in precarity, becomes a caregiver for Ari, a sensitive girl, and struggles to build a home while facing eviction, in a film that explores the intersection of poverty and non-binary identity.

The central character accumulates small jobs and lives counting money, beer after beer, in a soulless house. A flirt places Cass in the position of caregiver for Ari, a precocious and sensitive girl whose only reference is the intermittent love of her mother. Even though she barely knows how to take care of herself, and under threat of eviction, Cass becomes attached, throws herself recklessly into building a home, and wishes to be an example. With a professional career mainly linked to collaborative documentary and film teaching, Elena Oxman makes Outerlands her first fiction feature, a remarkable film that avoids easy gratification and prefers the creation of atmospheres, ambivalence, and subtlety in the relationship with the viewer. Starring Asia Kate Dillon, who has acclaimed and pioneering performances in series like Orange Is The New Black and Billions, and with longtime comedian and activist Lea DeLaria in a supporting role, Outerlands pays due attention to the intersection between poverty and non-binary identity in a city that is no longer a promised land.
