A dance and performance piece by Agniete Lisickinaite and Igor Shugaleev exploring the complex political and human tensions in Eastern Europe after the invasion of Ukraine, in a dialogue between fear and action, responsibility and geopolitical catastrophe.

Synopsis Agniete Lisickinaite / Igor Shugaleev CLAP & SLAP ACCESSIBILITY In English with Portuguese subtitles SPECTATOR CLUB 2 OCT Moderated by Maria Sequeira Mendes CLAP & SLAP explores a complex and paralysing tension that emerged in Eastern Europe (and specifically between Lithuania and Belarus) in the aftermath of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Igor and Agniete became politically involved in the events of the 2020 Belarusian revolution. The former took part in protests in Belarus and the latter in demonstrations in front of the Belarusian embassy in Vilnius. Igor was forced to leave his homeland; Agniete made the decision not to collaborate with Russian-speaking artists. Today, on the same stage, they try to establish a dialogue between fear and the need to act, between collective and personal responsibility, between personal tragedy and geopolitical catastrophe. The performance CLAP & SLAP aims to provoke a political and philosophical reflection on our ability to distinguish between responsibility and guilt, nationalism and patriotism, self-defence and aggression, the will to trust and the desire to protect, and the difficult balance between the need to defend ourselves and the risk of mirroring the very aggression we fight. An analysis of whether it is possible to respect others' differences, preserve our convictions and protect individual freedoms without violating anyone's rights. After being part of Spring Forward in May this year in Guimarães, CLAP & SLAP now comes to Lisbon in a first presentation by Agniete Lisickinaite and Igor Shugaleev at TBA. Agniete Lisickinaite, a Lithuanian choreographer, performer and educator, crosses contemporary dance, politics and civic action. Her participatory solo Hands Up, presented at festivals across Europe, explores gesture, solidarity and protest. She is co-founder of Be Company with Greta Grineviciute and advocates dance as a social practice, seeing choreography as activism, a means of dialogue, resistance and transformation. She currently teaches at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Igor Shugaleev, a choreographer and performer born in Belarus and based in Warsaw, combines physical theatre, dance, performance and activism. In practice, he explores the vulnerability of the body in extreme states through endurance, repetition and intensity. The performance 375 0908 2334 / The Body You Are Calling Is Currently Not Available (2021) is a visceral protest against the violence of the Belarusian government and has toured across Europe. Both are recognised for their politically committed work exploring protest culture, political oppression and personal freedom.
