Visit highlighting Michel Giacometti's legacy in preserving Portuguese popular culture, with film records.

Michel Giacometti traveled the rural country to record and preserve popular culture of oral tradition, combating the cultural homogenization that the Estado Novo promoted through a folklorized and idealized vision of Portuguese culture. Giacometti sought the authenticity of popular cultural expressions, often marginalized. By giving voice to peasants, he contributed to the democratization of culture, involving in the historical and cultural record those that official culture excluded. Giacometti considered that it was the elderly, and especially women, who preserve tradition. By praising their voices, he promoted plurality and diversity, fundamental principles of democracy. Giacometti left a legacy for a democratic culture. The television series Povo que Canta (RTP) is an example of how his work translated into a democratic pedagogy, bringing to the general public knowledge about forgotten traditions. In this visit, accompanied by film records, we highlight some of these figures that the ethnologist brought out of anonymity.
