Brief Introduction With Carla Sofia Dates Saturdays | 17 and 24 October and 14 and 21 November Time 10.30 to 12.30 TARGET AUDIENCE: Adults and Young People [aged 16 and over] with no previous experience required PARTICIPANTS: Min. 5 Oriental dance is a dance of women for women of all ages and body shapes. Its main characteristic is the rhythmic movement of the hips and abdominal muscles. It is composed of a series of vibrating movements, accents, undulations, pelvic movements and rotations, which work the body as a whole. Combined with music and a snake-like sinuosity, these movements were originally an integral part of fertility rituals and preparation for motherhood. Oriental dance promotes sociability, self-esteem, sensuality, strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, body awareness and balance. Above all, it makes it possible to discover that we can have fun dancing, freeing and controlling the body at the same time. The physical and emotional benefits of Oriental Dance make it a true therapy for the body and mind. PROGRAMME Day 1 | Alignment In Oriental Dance, the body is aligned vertically between the earth and the sky. The earth, symbol of reality, truly the ground we step on, is also our body; the sky, symbol of the Divine. Our body is a channel connecting earth and sky. Day 2 | Undulations Undulations are movements that, as the name indicates, are circular: circles, figure-eights, spirals, infinities. Our body draws movements of the world and of life, making the water inside us move and bringing physical health and emotional balance. Day 3 | Accentuations Accentuations are strong, energetic movements, danced to the rhythm and the beating of the heart. Day 4 | Shimmies Shimmies are vibrations that make the blood circulate, warm the body and tremble in connection with the movement of the world. Everything moves all the time, nothing is still. TESTIMONIALS FROM ORIENTAL DANCE STUDENTS AT THE MUSEUM OF THE ORIENT When I dance, I am surprised by the strength that is born in me. Oriental Dance is lightness — it carries us beyond ourselves. Oriental Dance awakens the GODDESS within me! Is there anything more POWERFUL than that? It is more than a dance, it is pure MAGIC! ? Oriental Dance classes bring me many things: they help me stretch my back and breathe deeply, distract me from my worries, and give me a community with whom I can share the feelings and emotions brought by dance. Oriental Dance is much more than the imaginary setting of the Thousand and One Nights, peopled by women with bare bellies and faces covered by a veil. It is a process in which the body is always evolving in the mastery of technique and movement. At the same time, Oriental Dance opens a space within us so that each dancer can meet her deepest, sleeping feminine root. And that is why it is important to dance! COURSE FORMAT The course will be held simultaneously in person, at the Museu do Oriente facilities, and online. The online version is streamed live in real time. To access it, participants only need a mobile phone, tablet or computer with a good internet connection. Each participant will receive
