Brief Introduction Claude Debussy: La mer Teatro Camões November 14, 2026, 6:30 PM What if, in a single program, one could map the creative effervescence of early modernism, its boundary-pushing, its interartistic dialogues, and its relentless search for a new musical language? The Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Joseph Swensen, presents key works of French modernism around a Portuguese voice shaped by the same currents. Opening the concert, Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), a landmark in music history generated from Mallarmé's symbolist poetry. By dissolving the boundaries between rhythms, harmony and orchestral color, this work introduced a new conception of musical time, in which atmosphere surpasses argument and the sinuous flute theme floats adrift, like consciousness itself. The Violin Concerto (1916) by Luís de Freitas Branco, here performed by Carlos Damas (soloist of the Parisian premiere of the work), constitutes a singular feat in Portuguese music. Based on modal exploration and cyclic forms closer to César Franck than to Impressionism, it reveals a composer navigating between the heritage of the past and an unequivocally personal harmonic voice, decades ahead of its wider recognition. Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte (1899), a meditation on a Renaissance court dance, brings stillness and luminous orchestral restraint to the program. Closing the evening, Debussy's ambitious La mer (1905): three symphonic sketches in which the sea becomes an inexhaustible source of color, movement and emotional depth; a work in infinite renewal, like the tides it evokes. Four works, three composers, but a shared conviction: that music, when free from conventions, becomes something close to nature itself.
