A chamber programme devoted to the lower strings — viola, cello and double bass — bringing together Bach's Ciaccona in Ichiro Nodaira's transcription, Albrechtsberger's Divertimento, the young Mendelssohn's Adagio from Symphony No. 8, and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, the only one of the six without violins.

When the violins fall silent, the lower strings take the floor: this is the thread running through the programme, bringing together works from three centuries centred on the viola, the cello and the double bass. The Ciaccona from Partita No. 2, BWV 1004, written by Bach in 1720 for solo violin and presented here in Ichiro Nodaira's transcription, shifts the original from D minor to G minor, transferring to the viola a cycle of variations over an ostinato bass that ranks among the densest contrapuntal constructions of the Baroque period. Next comes the Divertimento in D major by Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, a counterpoint theorist of the late eighteenth century and later Beethoven's teacher, written for two violas and double bass — an unusual scoring that lifts the viola out of its subordinate role of harmonic filling and gives it melodic prominence. From the young Mendelssohn, the Adagio from Symphony No. 8, composed at the age of thirteen under the guidance of Carl Friedrich Zelter, who introduced him to the Baroque legacy: the piece, written for divided strings, dwells in the low register in a sombre texture that gradually becomes singable. Closing the programme is the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, the only one of the six concertos without violins, in which the two concertante violas stand out as the protagonists, with the basso continuo providing the harmonic foundation. Four works, one single way of listening: those who usually accompany now take the reins of interpretation.

Quando os violinos se silenciam, as cordas graves assumem a palavra: é este o fio que atravessa o programa, reunindo obras de três séculos em torno da viola, do violoncelo e do contrabaixo. A Ciaccona da Partita n.º 2 , BWV 1004, escrita por Bach em 1720 para violino solo e aqui apresentada na transcrição de Ichiro Nodaira, desloca o original de Ré menor para Sol menor, transferindo para a viola um ciclo de variações sobre baixo ostinato que figura entre as construções contrapontísticas mais densas do período barroco. Segue-se o Divertimento em ré maior de Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, teórico do contraponto no final do século XVIII, mais tarde professor de Beethoven, escrito para duas violas e contrabaixo, uma formação invulgar que retira a viola do papel subalterno de preenchimento harmónico e lhe confia o protagonismo melódico. Do jovem Mendelssohn, o Adagio da Sinfonia n.º 8 , composta aos treze anos sob a orientação de Carl Friedrich Zelter, que o iniciou no legado barroco: a página, escrita para cordas divididas, habita o registo grave num tecido sombrio que se vai tornando cantável. Fecha o programa o Concerto de Brandemburgo n.º 6 , único dos seis concertos sem violinos, em que as duas violas concertantes se. destacam como protagonistas, com o baixo contínuo a assegurar o fundamento harmónico. Quatro obras, uma mesma escuta: quem normalmente acompanha toma agora as rédeas da interpretação.
