Synopsis We are not exaggerating if we say that The Father (1887) is one of August Strindberg's fiercest plays. A seismic shock in three acts that still shakes the walls of a bourgeois family's living room to its very foundations. In a traditional household, the father, the Captain, and the mother, Laura, are in open conflict over the education of their daughter, Berta. "It's like being shut in a cage of tigers." When the Captain tries to impose his will, Laura retaliates, planting in her husband's feverish imagination the virus of doubt: is he, in fact, Berta's father? The uncertainty plunges the Captain into the devastating nightmare of paranoia, hallucination and even dementia. The Father stages several of the themes dear to Strindberg, not without a shadow of misogyny: the author saw relations between men and women as a "fight to the death for power". With this play, we return to the work of the playwright of "the vast expanses of the intimate" and to Gonçalo Waddington's directing work. Artistic credits Text August Strindberg. Sinopse Não exageramos se dissermos que O Pai (1887) é uma das peças mais ferozes de August Strindberg. Um abalo sísmico em três atos, que continua a sacudir até aos alicerces as paredes da sala de estar da família burguesa. Num lar tradicional, o pai, Capitão, e a mãe, Laura, estão em conflito aberto sobre a educação da filha, Berta. “É como estar metido numa jaula de tigres.” Quando o Capitão tenta impor a sua vontade, Laura retalia, instilando na imaginação febril do marido o vírus da dúvida: seria ele, de facto, o pai de Berta? A incerteza lança o Capitão no devastador pesadelo da paranoia, da alucinação e até da demência. O Pai põe em cena vários dos temas caros a Strindberg, não sem uma sombra de misoginia: o autor via as relações entre homens e mulheres como uma “luta de morte pelo poder”. Com esta peça, regressamos à obra do dramaturgo das “vastas extensões do íntimo” e ao trabalho de encenação de Gonçalo Waddington.
