Museu do Mar - Rei D. Carlos, Cascais

Cascais presents “A Última Chata” (The Last Chata), a documentary by Louyse Gerardo dedicated to the history of Simão, the last man who keeps alive the traditional knowledge of building the chata, a handcrafted boat linked to the history and maritime identity of Cascais. On 16 November, at 6:00 p.m., the Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos invites the public to discover the story of a craft that has spanned generations and is at risk of disappearing. Throughout the documentary, we follow Simão between the museum, his home and the sea, learning not only about the process of building the chata, but also about the memories, the knowledge and the relationships that have been built around this know-how. The narrative also recovers the figure of his master, now 92 years old, establishing a connection between different generations of men linked to boatbuilding and maritime life in Cascais. Filmed over a year and a half, “A Última Chata” (The Last Chata) was born from a close and continuous follow-up of Simão, seeking to record a knowledge that lies not only in the objects built, but also in the gestures, the stories and the memory of those who learned the craft. The documentary is a portrait of a person and of a way of life, reflecting on the importance of preserving the knowledge and practices that make up the intangible cultural heritage of coastal communities. Through Simão's story, the film offers a look at the relationship between memory, identity, territory and sea, questioning what happens when knowledge passed down from generation to generation no longer finds anyone who can carry it on.
