The Manuel de Brito Art Centre presents an exhibition dedicated to Menez, one of the most singular Portuguese artists of the 20th century, tracing her path from early abstraction to figuration and the luminous interiors of her final years. The show is on view until 2 January.

The CAMB, Manuel de Brito Art Centre, presents Menez in the Manuel de Brito Collection, an exhibition dedicated to one of the most singular Portuguese artists of the 20th century. Self-taught, Menez (1926, 1995) began painting at the age of 26, developing a deeply personal language, free from schools and conventions. She refused to give titles to her works and believed that painting should communicate on its own, without any need for explanations. The exhibition traces different moments of her artistic production, from the abstraction of the early years to the turn towards figuration, marked by the loss of her two eldest sons and by the representation of biblical themes and of the human condition. In the final years of her life, the artist devoted herself to painting luminous interiors, studios, female figures, books and gardens, revealing a universe of great sensitivity and intimacy. On view at the CAMB until 2 January next year, the show invites visitors to rediscover the work of an unavoidable figure of Portuguese art. ARV.
