The Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and cellist Steven Isserlis perform works by Pinho Vargas, Saint-Saëns and Fauré, culminating in Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.

Synopsis They call it the 'Fate' Symphony: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is a monument of the Western collective imagination. It represents an individual consciousness determined to face the greatest adversities to defend ideals. It invites reflection on paths that become entangled in subjectivity, but are powerfully tempting. It is a personal experience with universal aspiration, simultaneously projected onto the individual and Humanity as a whole. In this program, it is combined with the expressive paradoxes of Pinho Vargas and with two other works that, from master and student, coincide in the intimate and eloquent register of the cello. The Concerto No. 2 by Saint-Saëns and the Elegy by Fauré are entrusted to the charisma of Steven Isserlis, an eclectic and acclaimed musician, with capital letters.
