The Museum of Lisbon - Palácio Pimenta presents the first part of its new long-term exhibition, tracing Lisbon's evolution from the Palaeolithic to the splendour of D. João V's reign through more than 500 pieces, including the emblematic Maqueta de Lisboa, the scale model of the city before the 1755 earthquake.

Synopsis The exhibition on the ground floor of the Museum of Lisbon - Palácio Pimenta reveals the evolution of Lisbon, a city that grew facing the River Tagus, from the Palaeolithic, more than one hundred thousand years ago, when the first inhabitants arrived in this territory, to the splendour the city reached during the reign of D. João V (r. 1706 - 1750). This is the first part of the new long-term exhibition, which will soon continue on floor 1, currently under renovation, where the history of Lisbon will be traced from the 18th century to the end of the 20th century. Through more than 500 pieces, more than 200 of which are new compared to the previous exhibition, the new exhibition is an invitation to a journey into the heart of the city, revealing Lisbon's evolution. The route, organised chronologically, unveils different stages of urban development and the occupation of the territory, complemented by aspects of everyday life and important architectural, artistic and archaeological landmarks. With ten thousand miniature buildings stretching over more than ten metres in length and four metres in width, the Maqueta de Lisboa, the scale model of the city before the 1755 earthquake and one of the most emblematic pieces in the Museum of Lisbon's collection, is once again available to the public. The importance of ceramics in the construction and identity of Lisbon justifies the creation of a specific area dedicated to 'Lisbon, city of ceramics', which interrupts the chronological narrative of the city, to be continued on floor 1 of the Museum. The current exhibition allows visits to the old kitchen and chapel, emblematic spaces of life in the palace, now turned into a museum. The Museum of Lisbon - Palácio Pimenta has another exhibition space: the Pavilhão Preto. Located in the gardens, it is intended for short and medium-term temporary exhibitions, mostly organised by the Museum, and also hosts exhibitions from other origins.
