An exhibition dedicated to the work of Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos, focusing on his printmaking and his relationship with Paula Rego, presented at Casa das Histórias Paula Rego.

In 2019, Casa das Histórias Paula Rego began a new cycle of exhibitions in the museum's room zero with the aim of presenting the work of artists whose paths have crossed, in one way or another, with Paula Rego. The idea of dedicating an exhibition to Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos (1931, 2008) had long been considered, but it was with the recent acquisition by Fundação D. Luís I of a large part of his printed work that its realization became pertinent within the scope of the commemorations of 'Cascais Capital Europeia da Democracia 2026'. The relationship of friendship and mutual admiration between the two artists, which lasted for several decades, was consolidated during the periods they lived in the British capital. In 1956, Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos began his studies in Printmaking with Anthony Gross at the prestigious art school Slade School of Fine Art and met Paula Rego, who was in her final year of the Painting course at the same school. During the 1960s, already as a teacher at the Slade, Bartolomeu Cid would play a decisive role in Rego's learning of printmaking techniques. Ideologically, they were also very close in the way they denounced the ideology of dictatorship and repression through their art. The selection of works for this exhibition had as its starting point these complicities/coexistences that are reflected in the artistic practices of both. More information: Fundação D.
