For the first time, the series “Árvores Vigilantes do Tempo” (Trees Watching Over Time) and “Flores e Frutos” (Flowers and Fruits), by photographer Fátima Carvalho, are presented together. In both, the camera pauses before what lives and transforms: ancient trees, flowers and fruits. By recording natural motifs, the photographer seeks to make tangible the unique duration of each of them. “Árvores Vigilantes do Tempo” takes as its starting point the oak of Salto, in Montalegre, the artist's hometown. The series extends to centennial or millennial olive trees, holm oaks and carob trees, photographed in various points of the country as true monuments to longevity. Among them is the Oliveira do Mouchão, a tree more than three thousand years old. The black and white photographs are printed on handmade paper or linen, supports that give texture to the images and define contours and shadows. Some received the intervention of painter Fernando Marques de Oliveira, who adds layers of color to them, giving rise to four-handed canvases that cross the gaze of two creators and friends. The series is accompanied by texts by Rosa Alice Branco, Maria do Carmo Serén and José Manuel Mendes. In “Flores e Frutos”, the photographer continues the investigation into the passage of time with images of flowers and fruits captured in distinct phases, from opening to maturation, exposed to the air, light and humidity that transform them before the camera. The images contrast freshness and decadence. Fátima Carvalho returns to the same motifs in different states and under different conditions, attentive to the instant and to the wait for what will come next. Some images were embroidered, adding a layer of manual work that refers to the traditional knowledge that the artist values. An exhibition of the Fundação D. Luís I, with the support of the Câmara Municipal de Cascais, on display on floor 0 of the Centro Cultural de Cascais. More information at www.fundacaodomluis.pt/arvores-flores.
