The exhibition 'Cartography of Time, an Eternal Journey' brings together Cristóbal Toral's work, in which ordinary objects such as suitcases become metaphors for the human condition, exploring travel, memory and identity.

Cristóbal Toral's painting stands out in the contemporary art scene for its ability to transform ordinary objects into powerful metaphors of the human experience. Throughout his career, the artist developed a visual language of his own, marked by rigorous realism and a strong symbolic dimension, characteristics that invite the viewer to reflect on universal themes such as travel, memory, identity and uprootedness. Among the most characteristic elements of his work are suitcases, luggage and figures of travellers. Far from merely representing everyday objects, these motifs take on a deeper meaning, evoking life paths, geographical and emotional displacements, encounters, partings and farewells. In his canvases, travel often emerges as a metaphor for the human condition, marked by the constant search for a place of belonging and the inevitability of change. The technical quality of his painting, which brings him close, for example, to João Abel Manta, is another of the most notable aspects of his work. Toral combines meticulous execution with carefully constructed compositions, in which the faithful representation of reality coexists with an atmosphere of introspection and silence. His wide landscapes and apparently empty spaces create settings that suggest waiting, solitude and contemplation, reinforcing the emotional weight of the works. Beyond the existential dimension, Toral's artistic production frequently dialogues with social and historical issues: migrations, conflicts, borders and population movements in the contemporary world find an echo in his painting, which presents itself simultaneously as a testimony of its time and a reflection on the challenges faced by today's societies. Cristóbal Toral's work can, after all, be understood as a visual meditation on the human trajectory: using images that are simple at first sight but loaded with meaning, the artist builds a poetic universe that transcends cultural and temporal borders, inviting each viewer to recognise in his paintings something of their own life experience.
