M/16 The cinema of Sébastien Lifshitz, one of the best documentary filmmakers in contemporary French cinema, always appears serious and elegant. In a certain harmony with his films The Invisibles and Bambi, A Young Man from a Good Family is another clean and rigorous portrait, lacking easy judgments, about old age. The film places us before the figure of Claude Loir, who reviews his life from the discovery of his homosexuality when it was still illegal, to becoming a porn film star in the 1970s and 1980s, passing through his time at the Comédie Française and his darkest phase, half-hidden in clandestinity. The emotion of the testimony arises from the tone in which Loir tells how he embraced life: always as he best understood, guided by intuition, crossed by a poetic air of freedom, perhaps overly romantic. He, who was the least “star” of the porn stars, who was never interested in the material side of the business, who always suffered in silence, wounded by an eternal lack of love...
