To mark 50 years of democracy, A Barraca presents a three-episode show created by Maria do Céu Guerra that celebrates and reflects on the lives and work of Portuguese women — from Natália Correia to Amália and the Three Marias — made possible by the April Revolution, while warning how fragile these achievements remain.

Synopsis FREEDOM, WOMAN OF APRIL A show in 3 episodes As part of the celebrations of 50 years of Democracy, the Ministry of Culture and the Commemorative Commission of the Fiftieth Anniversary of 25 April 1974 decided to extend an invitation to the theatre companies that were born or consolidated during the period of the Revolution, so that they would create new shows or revive old productions and develop complementary activities, in order to contribute to public awareness of the role theatre played in our democratic transition. The works presented through this initiative will be part of the Official Programme of the Commemorations. A Barraca answered the challenge with the proposal of presenting a reflection in which it celebrates the changes in the life, mindsets, ambitions and the cultural, social and economic evolution of Portuguese women made possible by the most profound social transformation recorded in contemporary history: the April Revolution. This enormous Portuguese victory is highlighted here through the evocation of the lives and work of some of the women who, in their various areas of public influence or simply through the example of their own lives, fought to allow Portuguese women to begin sharing the centre of history. It is a reflection on Portuguese femininity, on how far it has come and on what remains to be done. Far from being a eulogy, this show will be more of a warning about the fragility of our achievements and how much we must defend them. We decided to divide it into 3 episodes — presented to the public as a sharing of the working process — during the period the Portuguese State dedicated to the commemorations of the 50 years of the Revolution of 25 April 1974, between 2024 and 2026.
