Fourth session of the Transatlantic Biographies programme, devoted to the Portuguese Inquisition trials of José Francisco Pereira and José Francisco Pedroso, enslaved Black men accused of sorcery with mandinga pouches, and to the exchange of knowledge and beliefs in the African diaspora.

Brief Introduction Transatlantic Biographies is a programme of visits to the permanent exhibition of the Museu de Lisboa, Palácio Pimenta, followed by a conversation about slavery, the Inquisition and religiosity. The fourth session analyses the Portuguese Inquisition proceedings brought against the mandingueiros José Francisco Pereira and José Francisco Pedroso. Synopsis In 1730, José Francisco Pereira and José Francisco Pedroso, enslaved Black men born in the former kingdom of Uidá (present-day Republic of Benin), were accused of sorcery practices with mandinga pouches, associated with spiritual systems of the Afro-Portuguese-Brazilian symbolic universe. The life paths of these two men reveal an intense exchange of knowledge and beliefs in the African diaspora. The analysis focuses on inquisitorial dynamics, the circuits of knowledge sharing and the mechanisms of resistance and cultural circularity in a colonial context. This circular system places Lisbon at the centre of a trade network of mandinga pouches between the free and enslaved population. In yet another session of the Transatlantic Biographies programme, the aim is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relations and exchanges between religiosity, power and domination in the Atlantic space.
