Actress Diana Nicolau makes her debut as a theatre author with an intimate monologue about being a woman, trauma, motherhood, depression and the end of humanity, drawing on video, new circus and dance.

Best known to the general public for her television work, actress Diana Nicolau made her debut as a theatre author with a piece built from texts written over the last few years. After successful runs at Clube Estefânia and CAL, the monologue now returns at Teatro do Bairro. "As change was happening around me, and I waited to cross the border of Peru on foot, or to be seen in the bread queue, at the tax office or in a hospital chair, I scribbled hundreds of stories in notebooks the size of the pockets of my trousers," the author says about the written material used in Desconfortável, um monólogo. It is precisely "discomfort", understood as "what we feel immediately before change happens", that Diana Nicolau uses as a premise to, in an intimate register and from an admittedly "uncomfortable" position, talk about what it is to be a woman, about dealing with trauma and rejection, about facing the "ambivalence of motherhood" and depression, or about managing to keep living while perceiving the end of humanity due to environmental problems. A monologue of total commitment in which the author and actress draws on a varied set of stage devices and artistic languages, such as video, new circus and dance. [text: Frederico Bernardino/ACL, January 2024]. Technical sheet: Text, creation, direction and performance by Diana Nicolau.
