The Spirit of the Blue Frog and Other Tales

Thursday 3 December – Sunday 20 December

Chapitô, Lisbon

It has been years and years of playing at the classics of Western drama, from Oedipus to Hamlet, but, this time, the Companhia do Chapitô promises to surprise us by taking us to distant Japan and to the discovery of the traditional art of kaidan. In this new production, the most physical and fun of Portuguese theatre companies explores the potential of the legacy of Okamodo Kidô (1872-1939). This prolific playwright and researcher of Japanese popular mythology paid special attention to ghost stories of oral tradition, the kaidanes (from the kanji, that is, characters, kai, strange or ghostly, and dan, conversation or oral narrative), and wrote several tales inspired by these ancestral legends and myths that served to “embody the hope that the universe [has] a kind of corrective mechanism, that injustices will be avenged, if not in this life, in the next”. O Espírito da Rã Azul e outros contos (The Spirit of the Blue Frog and other tales) is a show for the whole family inspired by three kaidanes revisited by Kidô. FB. More information and bookings: [email protected]. Technical sheet: Collective Creation. Directed by Cláudia Nóvoa, Susana Nunes and Tiago Viegas; with Susana Nunes and Tiago Viegas.
