The 1 December Gala Concert (also designated as the Concert of Portugal, of the Restoration and of National Independence) resulted from the initiative of the 1 December Movement, and is today organised by the Historical Society of the Independence of Portugal within the framework of the National Commemorations of 1 December, in Lisbon, of which it constitutes the first act. It was an original idea of José Ribeiro e Castro, then founder and general coordinator of the 1 December Movement, launched in 2012 to defend the national holiday of 1 December and improve the commemorations of this historic date. The Concert consists solely of the performance of pieces by Portuguese composers, honouring the spirit, the freedom and the independence of Portugal, in the circumstance of the evocation of the Restoration of 1640.
