Choreographer and dancer Amrita Hepi, from the Bundjalung and Ngapuhi territories, in collaboration with theatre-maker Mish Grigor, makes her TBA debut with "Rinse", an intimate yet epic solo exploring the romance of beginnings and what happens when those initial emotions fade. Le Monde What is it about beginnings that is so intoxicating? Our constant craving for the first flutter caused by a romance, a scene, a canon, a theory, a relationship, a meal or a country. Created by Amrita Hepi, choreographer and dancer from the Bundjalung territories (Australia) and Ngapuhi (Aotearoa New Zealand), in collaboration with Australian theatre-maker Mish Grigor, Rinse explores the romanticism of beginnings and what comes next, when those initial emotions begin to fade and inertia sets in. After a striking presentation at last year's Festival d'Avignon, Hepi and Grigor now make their debut at TBA with a performance in which Hepi questions whether living in the vertigo of extinction has intensified the seduction of the past. By recreating on stage an entropic myth about origins, Rinse goes from end to end, weaving autobiographical elements together with the grand narratives of art, feminism, dance, emptiness, desire, popular culture and colonial history. An intimate but epic solo, based on an improvised score, that deepens Hepi's fascination with the hybridism of forms, celebrating dance as a place of memory and resistance. Amrita Hepi is a multidisciplinary artist and choreographer based in Naarm and Bangkok. She works on the idea of the archive, particularly with how the body is traversed by ancestry, by people, by events and by the environment. Collaboration and a sense of belonging are fundamental principles of her artistic practice, fusing fact and fiction, memory and ethnography, the local and the singular in her performances. Amrita trained at NAISDA and at Alvin Ailey NYC. Acclaimed by critics, Amrita is one of the artists on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Mish Grigor is an artist working in the field of performance, exploring diverse collaborative formats. Through autobiographical tools, humour and fiction, she seeks to examine, waste and value time spent with other people. Driven by an interest in the unpredictable, Grigor frequently uses spaces for dialogue, conversational strategies and other devices of imposed live presence. Based in Melbourne since 2017, she is a Director of APHIDS, together with Lara Thoms and Eugenia Lim.
