Brief Introduction MARBLED PAPER WORKSHOP With Octávio Júlio DATES | Saturday | October 17 HOURS | 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM PARTICIPANTS | Min. 8, Max. 11 PRICE | €65 (materials included) The technique of marbled paper has, over the centuries, developed as an area of painting on paper. This form of plastic expression has been little publicized until now. With the emergence of Suminagashi in Japan, and later Ebru in Turkey, there was a whole evolution of this technique, according to the various countries where it was produced. The introduction of new materials and the capacity for adaptation gave opportunity for new concepts to emerge, as well as new plastic realities. Of very restricted knowledge, located in the knowledge of the great masters of bookbinding, it came to be used as a support for sacred documents in more remote times. As times evolved, marbled paper sheets would also be used in Alba Amicorum and often used as wrapping paper. Being part of a material heritage that is intended to be maintained, preserved and above all publicized, it becomes essential to transmit this knowledge, since it can derive into new forms of application and also into new plastic and artistic concepts, thus enabling new forms of study and research. In this workshop we will introduce the different materials according to the different techniques to be used, including the preparation of the bath itself, the inks and the support paper. We will also understand the relationship established between the concentration of pigments, the plasticity of the different materials (inks) and the bath itself. Work plan Bath dilution Paper preparation Making combs Ink dilution: watercolor, gouache and acrylic Ox gall Applying inks to the bath Placing and lifting the paper The drying process Cleaning the material Experimentation Doubts and clarifications Note: Participants should bring a lab coat, an old t-shirt and a container for liquids (about 3-4 liters) if they wish to take the bath home. OCTÁVIO JÚLIO He has a degree in Art History. His training in ceramic restoration, painting and book production are responsible for the awakening and great involvement in the study of an almost extinct art, so shrouded in secrecy by the great masters of bookbinding, Marbled Paper.
