Padrão. House-Obsession

Sunday 25 October – Wednesday 30 December

Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Lisbon

More than a monument, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos is an image deeply rooted in the Portuguese collective imagination. The exhibition Padrão. Casa-Obsessão proposes a reflection on that continuous presence, gathering a vast set of objects, documents and materials that, from 1940 to the present day, have used the monument as a visual reference. Starting from a collection as heterogeneous as it is revealing, the show explores the multiple forms of representation, appropriation and interpretation of the Padrão, revealing how its image long ago surpassed its commemorative function to become a symbol subject to successive readings. Between memories, political discourses, everyday objects and artistic interventions, the history of a monument built during the Estado Novo, rebuilt in 1960 and constantly revisited by the contemporary gaze emerges. Curated by the researcher Ellen W. Sapega, specialist in Portuguese memory and culture, Casa-Obsessão invites the public to follow a path made of layers, tensions and meanings. The result is the portrait of a living monument, simultaneously celebrated, questioned and reinvented, whose relevance continues to fuel the debate about history, identity and collective memory. ARV. Every day, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (from October onwards it closes at 6 p.m.). Fact sheet: Scientific consultancy by Ellen W. Sapega (University of Wisconsin-Madison).
