The Monument to the Discoveries is a monument in Lisbon celebrating the Portuguese Age of Discovery. It offers a panoramic view over Belém and the Tagus, and includes exhibitions and a viewpoint.
Validity of Use 90 days after purchase Synopsis Built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition, the Monument to the Discoveries was demolished following the cyclone of 1941, due to the serious damage the monument suffered. In 1960, it was rebuilt to mark the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the death of Infante D. Henrique, a central figure in Portuguese maritime expansion. Designed by architect Cottinelli Telmo (1897, 1948) and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida (1898, 1975), the monument stands 56 meters tall, taking the symbolic form of a stylized caravel. Distributed along its sides are 33 historical figures from the 15th and 16th centuries, among which Vasco da Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral, Fernão de Magalhães, Luís de Camões, and D. Filipa de Lencastre stand out. At the prow, leading the group, is the imposing figure of Infante D. Henrique. It was from this location that Vasco da Gama departed on July 8, 1497, to discover the sea route to India. The viewpoint offers a unique view over Lisbon, Belém, and the Tagus. Inside the monument, there is an auditorium and a room dedicated to temporary exhibitions, which enhance the cultural experience of visitors. Outside, the compass rose stands out with a diameter of 50 meters, designed by the studio of architect Cristino da Silva. At its center, an engraved planisphere marks the dates and routes of Portuguese expeditions. The Monument to the Discoveries is visited annually by hundreds of thousands of Portuguese and foreigners who choose the Monumental Zone of Belém as a leisure and strolling area.
