Built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition, the Monument to the Discoveries was demolished following the 1941 cyclone, due to the severe damage the monument suffered. In 1960, it was rebuilt to mark the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the death of Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry the Navigator), a central figure of Portuguese maritime expansion.
