Iris Buchholz Chocolate

Wednesday 4 November – Sunday 28 February

Pavilhão Julião Sarmento, Lisbon

The Julião Sarmento Pavilion presents Entre Continentes (Between Continents), an exhibition by Iris Buchholz Chocolate, an artist born in Germany in 1974 who has maintained a permanent connection with the capital of Angola since 2003, first working for the Luanda Triennial and then, from 2010 onwards, also making the city her place of residence. The artist's solo exhibition brings together two installations that will be shown for the first time in Portugal. In A Sul. O Sombreiro (2015), a set of sculptural objects, including wigs, armour, helmets and ceremonial garments, evoke the structures of military, secular and ecclesiastical power. The title refers to the novel of the same name by Pepetela, inspired by the colonial conquest of the Benguela region in the 17th century. Developed over two years, the installation resulted from a collaboration between hairdressers, blacksmiths, tailors and seamstresses from Luanda and Vienna, in a process that brings African artisanal techniques closer to visual codes associated with European courts. The second installation, Tudo Aquilo de Que Não Nos Lembramos (2022, 2026), immerses us in an environment covered in blue fabric, accompanied by a sound composition of (underwater) breathing, wind and fire. The work evokes issues related to memory, ancestors, the transatlantic slave trade and historical conflicts, but also water scarcity, marine pollution and the environmental crisis. Here too, drawing on literary references, notably José Eduardo Agualusa's work Estação das Chuvas (The Rainy Season), the installation articulates past, present and the possibility of a collectively built future. The title Entre Continentes (Between Continents) refers to the transit between Europe and Africa, addressing the relations between individual and collective memory, colonialism, migration and intergenerational transmission. The public programme accompanying the exhibition includes the workshop A Pele do Invisível (The Skin of the Invisible), led by the artist on 5 and 6 November, from 3pm to 5pm, with activities of creation, reflection and writing aimed especially at young audiences, and a Gallery Talk with the artist on 7 November at 4pm. Tuesday to Sunday, from 11am to 7pm. Technical sheet: Curated by Isabel Carlos.
