Cinema Nimas celebrates Agnès Varda with the largest retrospective of the filmmaker ever held in Portugal, featuring 36 films across features, shorts, fiction and documentary, including works such as Cléo de 5 à 7, Sans Toit ni loi and Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse.

Agnès Varda (1928-2019), a Belgian filmmaker who built her career in French cinema, is celebrated this summer with a major retrospective, the largest to date in Portugal, at Cinema Nimas. The programme includes 36 films, features and shorts, fiction and documentary. A woman of great curiosity and freedom, a trailblazer, she built a unique body of work that today inspires other filmmakers. Her cinematic debut came in 1954 with Le Pointe Court, a film edited by Alain Resnais that heralded what would become the Nouvelle Vague movement. Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962) is an example of the audacity of this new movement and of a filmmaker whose experimental style is always present. In 1985, with Sans Toit ni lo i, she won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Her work, in which documentary and fiction blur, constantly includes social criticism, feminism and a critical look at current affairs. Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000), a moving film about gleaners, people who recover and recycle leftovers and debris discarded by others, reflects precisely that contemporaneity. Agnès Varda is also often a central figure in her own work. In Les plages d’Agnès (2008), an autobiographical documentary, she delves into her memories, returning to the beaches of her life and, once again with humour and emotion, builds a narrative that reveals her life journey.
