Every two years, the opening of the Mostra Espanha is marked with a “Guest Work” which, in 2026, takes on the plural with Maruja Mallo. Two pieces are in tune with the motto of this edition, Spain in motion: diversity and sustainable futures, and with three of its thematic axes: art, culture, oceans and sustainability; art, ecology and climate change; and art, culture, borders and ruralities. Basuras (1930) and Naturaleza Viva (1943) represent two visions of the work of the avant-garde artist and take us on a journey from the grey suburbs of pre-war Madrid to the fullness of colour of the Chilean beaches of Valparaíso, during her American exile.
