Nature & Neuroscience Workshop

Curious how nature can help us find flow state and focus again? Summer brings its own kind of magic, but also a lot of stimulation. As autumn arrives, our nervous system is often in need of a reset. This workshop explores what recent research in neuroscience and cognitive psychology tells us about why being in nature is one of the most effective ways to do that. Together we'll move through an intentionally designed experience that combines evidence-based science with hands-on gardening in the Goethe-Institut’s herb and veggie garden. So you don't just learn about the effects of nature on your brain, but you feel them directly. 🔔 What we'll cover What flow state actually is neurologically, why overstimulation blocks it, and how nature helps us reset our reward system How your attention depletes throughout the day and the mechanisms through which nature restores it The vagus nerve, multisensory stimulation, and why natural environments are one of the most reliable ways to bring down cortisol The intriguing role of cortisol in triggering brain growth factors that support neuroplasticity, and what a 2026 study found about gardening, biological age and longevity How soil microbes may influence serotonin levels in the body, and what this means for our mood Hands-on gardening, to make the research make sense Practical, evidence-based tools to integrate into your work and daily life 💬 What other participants say "Fascinating - and it's good to know the information is truthful and evidence-based." "Loved learning all about the theories and being able to do it ourselves afterwards." ✏️ No science background needed, just bring curiosity and a notebook, and get ready to see the natural world (and your own mind) in a new way. 🧩 Includes: science-based content, gardening materials and seedlings (kindly supported by the Goethe-Institut), sensory activities, take-home practices. 🔎 About the host Hi, I’m Marion, a neuroscientist (PhD) and founder of The Plant Wisdom Project. Through my research on brain plasticity and passion for gardening, I became fascinated by how we can shape our environment for positive change through nature. I love creating spaces where people can slow down, learn, and connect with nature and each other. And experience how tending to plants builds mental clarity, calm and resilience.
