ISIN MAKEES takes the Timorese skulls held at the University of Coimbra as a starting point for a reflection on colonialism, memory and mourning, in a show that crosses theatre, music, dance and visual arts, created by Zia Soares.

Synopsis On the northern coast of East Timor, during the Laleia War (1878-81), Portuguese colonial forces violently suppressed local uprisings. An imprecise number of Timorese were beheaded and 35 skulls were abducted, exiled and kept, to this day, in Portugal: hostages, unburied, separated from their bodies, their community and outside their (own) land. ISIN MAKEES (goosebumps), a show that moves between theatre, music, expanded cinema, dance and visual arts, starts from the unburied Timorese skulls at the University of Coimbra, where narratives and lacunar images persist. On stage, the gesture of beheading is repeated to exhaustion, dissected and reiterated until it becomes dysfunctional; the construction of a UMA LULIK (sacred house) establishes a space of care, mediating between the living and ancestors; bodies become porous, ready for bones to find matter, voice, breath. ISIN MAKEES is a volatile archive, accessed through the body, nightmare and dream. Talk with artists on 14 February.
