Based on a poem by Kim Chi-ha (1941–2022), South Korean poet, playwright and political activist recognised as the leading 'poet of resistance' against the military dictatorship in South Korea during the 1970s and 1980s, Forward is not the only way is a creation that establishes a continuous and vibrant dialogue with the music of fundamental composers, whose aesthetics intertwine in a singular language. The music of J. S. Bach, Kurtág, Takemitsu, Hosokawa and Messiaen forms a counterpoint with the actor João Grosso and a cast of dancers and performers of several generations, in a narrative that explores the body, memory and choreographic quotation: a subtle allusion to the past and to narrative memory, to the body as archive and history.
