Visits to the baroque church commissioned by D. João V in 1711 to house a miraculous image of the Infant Jesus, notable for its polychrome marbles, gilded woodcarving and paintings by Vieira Lusitano and André Gonçalves. Visits are by prior booking only (5 €).
Built at the initiative of King D. João V to house a venerated image of the Menino Deus (Infant Jesus), famed as miraculous, the works began in 1711 to a design by the royal architect João Antunes, and were later continued by Frederico Ludovice in 1736. The main façade, whose crowning was never completed, features a majestic portal with Corinthian columns. With an octagonal plan, its interior stands out for the polychromy of its marbles, particularly in the altarpiece of the high chapel, as well as for the gilded woodcarving and the paintings on the remaining altarpieces, attributed to various authors, in particular Vieira Lusitano, André Rubira and André Gonçalves. Note also the ceiling painting of the nave, in trompe l'oeil, and the statuary by João António Bellini de Pádua (Quo Vadis). Visits to the church take place only with prior booking, via the address: [email protected]. 5 €. heritage.
