Three hundred years ago, Symphonies were very similar to Concertos. They were distinguished by the fact that they had no soloist, and because they were technically less demanding. Later, they evolved considerably. Their durations extended, as did the orchestras, adding a greater number of winds and percussion to the strings. The lower «voices» broke free from the rhythmic and harmonic foundation so characteristic of Baroque music. Composers explored new technical and dramatic resources in the sequence of four movements: the first at a fast tempo, the second slower, the third in a danceable triple meter, and the fourth in a lively and impetuous finale. In this concert, the Metropolitan Orchestra reveals the Classical Symphony from the inside. To this end, it invented a «Frankenstein Symphony», which joins together four movements from four different symphonies. Each of them will be conducted by a different conductor as well, thanks to the special collaboration of the Degree Programme in Music of the National Academy of Orchestra.
