There is a kind of vertigo in the encounter with Daniel V. Melim's paintings. It is not merely a vertigo provoked by the play of scales or by the overlapping of figures, but a deeper sensation of disorientation. Through the images the artist constructs, the feeling of entering a universe that seems familiar and that, at the same time, escapes the possibility of being recognized grows denser. Masks, partially hidden bodies, small figures that appear mysteriously, presences with their backs to the observer, flowers that take on an almost monumental dimension and what seemed to be landscape sometimes becomes the very event of the image. There seem to exist, latent, worlds that contain other worlds, bringing us closer to an experience of something that is sensed before it is understood. (…). It is precisely in that space between the familiar and the unknown that Canção de dentro settles. The image does not offer immediate answers, but leads us through an experience of strangeness, memory and discovery. The images emanate a very particular energy, not because they enclose a meaning, but because they seem to keep something open. Figures, plants, gestures and landscapes remain between states, without completely settling into a form or a narrative. Perhaps it is in this condition of potentiality that they preserve their mystery, and that painting becomes, also, a way of listening to what remains within. Carolina Quintela.
